Assam Gaja Mitra Scheme

This scheme was approved for the 80 high-risk villages of the 8 Districts of the state, where the issue of Human Elephant conflict grows. Under this scheme, the community-based team has been formed, and each team have 8 local members of the same district. All these teams will deploy to 80 villages. All these teams will provide their services during the peak conflict month. Usually, these months come in the season of paddy cultivation.

Objective of the Gaja Mitra Scheme

The main objective of launching this scheme is to prevent and secure the elephants and humans. Because at the time of human elephant conflict, it may cause the death of both. From 2000 to 2023, a total of 1,400 human and 1,209 elephant death rate recorded. By launching the Assam Gaja Mitra Scheme, the government is also going to maintain the facilities of the food stock for the elephant. The government always wants a peaceful life for both humans and elephants.

Features of Assam Gaja Mitra Scheme

  • High Risk Districts: These schemes were implemented in 8 high-risk districts of Assam state, like Goalpara, Baksa, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath.
  • Gaja Mitra Team: A total of 80 rapid community-based teams will be based in every area, and members should be local in all 80 conflict villages of this district.
  • Working Period: This team will be deployed for 6 months at the time of high risk, i.e. during the Paddy cultivation season.
  • Technology Used: Government also going to use the AI Technology camera, which is installed in the Forest area, to track elephant movement.

Assam Gaja Mitra Salary

Each of the local members who work as Gaja Mitra under this scheme will get per month financial allowance from the side of the government. The salary must be Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 14,000 per month. This amount can be distributed by the head of the village to every team member.

All members will get property training from the side of the government, so that they can improve their understanding of the behaviour of the elephant, community preparedness and also develop the ability to protect the crops.
